PhD programme
PhD program
At the Doctoral School of Linguistics, it is possible to obtain a doctoral degree in all classical Buddhist languages.
For the specialisation in Buddhist philology, applicants may apply to the Buddhist Philology doctoral program of the Doctoral School of Linguistics (taught exclusively in English), which is headed by Dr. Péter Dániel Szántó. The program is open to applicants with prior studies in Far Eastern languages (such as Tibetan, Chinese, Sanskrit, etc.).
Applicants with a research proposal in Buddhist religious or philosophical studies may apply to the Intercultural Philosophy doctoral program of the Doctoral School of Philosophy. This program is primarily supervised by the instructors of our department and is headed by Dr. Ferenc Ruzsa. A high level of language proficiency is also a prerequisite here, from which we can only exceptionally grant an exemption; in such cases, the missing language skills must be acquired through intensive study as part of the PhD program. Our previous doctoral students have worked with Pāli, Sanskrit, Tibetan, or Chinese sources, but we are also pleased to consider research proposals based on other languages, provided that a suitably qualified co-supervisor is involved.
